The maker of these Japanese archetypal folding knives, Mr. Miyamoto is in the third generation of hand forged knife manufacturing.
Until a few decades ago, nearly every school children and young man in Japan owned this type of pocket knife. The Japanese used this type of knife for pencil sharpening or wood carving. This unique type of knife was developed back in 1894 and features triple-layered carbon steel (blue-paper-steel) blade being shaped like a Japanese sword. The blade is set in a folded sheet of metal. It has no locking mechanism. The knife is opened using the forged lever tang. The blades are hand-forged and extremely hard but also relatively brittle. Rough handling can lead to chipping of the blade and other damages.
