The rigid version of the Sashigane only shows numerals that are multiples of 5 and 10 to make the scales more legible. The tens digits are red on the front and black on the back of the square.
On the long blade the outside edge is chamfered and the profile is ground slightly hollow. The short blade has a profile like a trapezium with the narrow C-side on the inside. The profile is contoured in both cases so as not to smudge freshly scribed lines when the square is shifted.
